Chippy's History

Chippy's First Mobile Van
Chippy's Second Mobile Van
Chippy's Current Mobile Van

In April 2004 we took delivery of a bespoke designed mobile Fish & Chip vehicle and once again we hit the road to serve the local villages and outlying communities.

And in January 2017 we have now taken delivery of our second bespoke designed mobile Fish & Chip vehicle to carry on serving fish & chips to our local villages.

We are now in our fourth generation of cooking fish & chips so we like to think we know a little about it! Over the years we have always kept up with technology and now have the latest state of the art cooking equipment in both our shop and on our mobile vehicle. We have also been fortunate to have a team of loyal, friendly and helpful staff who always strive to ensure our products are the very best.

So come and try Chippy’s today, either at our shop or from our van. We are sure you will not be disappointed.

Chippy’s is a family run business which was established in 1954 by our grandparents Mick & Ivy Brimsden and our parents Chuck & June Edwards at The Old Fish & Chip Shop in the market town of Clare, Suffolk.

In 1955 we expanded our business to Haverhill taking over the old (Copseys) Fish & Chip shop at 36/38 High Street in Haverhill which is now where Axa Insurance is located).

In 1966 we purchased our first Mobile Fish & Chip van and for ten years we travelled all over Suffolk selling fish & chips in the local towns and villages.

Due to a redevelopment of the High Street in 1973, we had to close our shop but we moved to a purpose designed shop in Strasbourg Square on the Chalkstone Estate, Haverhill.

Chippy's Hygiene Awards

Back in 1999 Chippy’s was the first take-a-way in Haverhill to be awarded the Prestigious Health & Hygiene Award, presented by St Edmundsbury Borough Council. We have continued to uphold the very high standards set by the Environmental Health Department and due to our commitment we have been presented with this award every year right up to 2010.

Now the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme has become a nationally recognised award supplied by the Food Standards Agency and Chippy’s has AGAIN been awarded the highest possible score of a 5 Rating!

Find out more about food hygiene ratings here.

Chippy's and the Environment

Chippy's reusable bags

We at Chippy’s are very conscious about environmental issues and want to play our part in conservation and protecting the environment around us. It is a key challenge to us to minimise the amount of consumer packaging we use while continuing to preserve the quality of our Fish & Chips.

Wherever possible, we aim to use recyclable materials in our packaging and work hard to minimise packaging waste and recycle as much as we can.

We adopt an equally conscious conservational view when it comes to purchasing our fish as we only buy fish that is certified to being caught from well managed fishing grounds.

Although our conservation and environmental efforts are only small in comparison to much larger businesses and industries, we at Chippy’s still like to think that we are playing our part in conserving the planet and the future for our children and grandchildren alike.
